On July 28th, the "backup"
car became the First Line Car when a Mazda 6
driver blew through a stop sign, writing off
the Fox I had been polishing for 14 years.
A fair number of the upgrades from the Blue
wagon made their way onto Red. And some new
things. Gol G3 Shifter Bushing Cage and the AG
Components Lower Stress Bar with Transmission
Bushing improved the shifter feel. Swapping to
the Soft Sport springs from the Race Springs
that were on the car softened the ride. And
the greatest modification of all... the
wondrously comfortable MK2 Recaro Seats.
The Rush to Gold Bridge route included the
first two inland ferry crossings which would
lead to adventures that will hopefully collect
all 14.

The heater core has been an
issue with Foxes pretty much since the cars
were new. It was a victory to replace the
factory plastic/aluminum core with a
brass/copper custom unit.
The support rod, metal bushings and short
throw shifter increased the joy rowing through
the gears.

What turned out to be a head gasket issue
resulted in a motor swap. And transmission
swap. And a new steering rack.
The addition of lightness began in earnest.
The flywheel and aluminum pulleys took out
over 4kg of mass. Throttle response is greatly
improved. The LSD is a lot of fun. Both wheels
can hop instead of just one.

There is controversy
about the advantages of an Electric Water
Pump. Freeing up power at the cost of
increasing electrical load? How does that
even work? In a surprisingly satisfying way.
The drivablilty has improved. Faster
throttle response and more power from idle
to red line. There is occasionally added
drag from the alternator working harder but
the fun factor is greatly increased. The
limited slip saved me more than once on the
muddy Big Bar Adventure.

The new tires have change
the driving character of the car. The old
Dunlops were very sticky. The new Toyos - not
so much. While being less pointable, the car
is more tossable. It is in some ways it is
more fun and comfortable to drive but also
more work as traction control is the right
foot. The motor lost oil pressure. It wasn't
just a blinking dash light. A bunch of new
parts later, Red is running stronger than
ever. If I had had the gauges, I might not
have done in the head gasket on the old motor.
Now to find a place to mount an Oil Pressure
Gauge.

The light weight rotors are
a joy. The are coated and seem more precise
and balanced than the iron ones they replaced.
They are also 6 pounds lighter, which is
noticeable. The spoiler was a short lived
experience. 18 days. A hidden drop at the side
of the road turned it onto a 3 piece spoiler.
The restoration is going to be extensive. The
new sticky tires have more sidewall than the
old sticky Dunlops had. They seem to
compliment the suspension. Ride and comfort
improved. And almost as much grip.

If you had tried to tell me
how much the lighter unsprung mass of MMP
Willwood calipers and carriers would improve
the enjoyment factor and decrease the NVH, I
